Suhaimi Sukiman’s journey in coffee has embraced both the old and the new of Singapore’s coffee culture. From his early days frequenting kopitiams with his Atuk and Ayah, watching kopi being pulled, to stepping behind the counter as a young barista at Starbucks, his love for coffee grew alongside the city’s evolving coffee scene.
After serving his national duty, he returned to Starbucks in 2005, this time as a manager. It was here that he developed a strong foundation in leadership and training, evolving to become a Classroom Facilitator and eventually a Coffee Ambassador for Starbucks Singapore in his final year with the Siren. His drive to learn soon led him to Cuppachoice International in 2007, a specialty coffee roastery where he immersed himself in roasting and coffee sales. Through perseverance, he climbed the ranks from Executive to Director of Operations and Training by 2010.
He also became a competitive barista, placing third in the Singapore National Barista Championship in 2010 and 2011, and third again in the Singapore National Latte Art Championship in 2011. His expertise expanded when he joined Toby’s Estate in 2011, traveling to coffee farms and judging competitions. In 2013, he achieved a career milestone: becoming one of 55 globally certified World Barista Championship judges.
In 2014, Suhaimi became a co-partner at Dutch Colony Coffee Co., overseeing sourcing, roasting, and education. Under his leadership, Dutch Colony expanded regionally, supplying coffee to multiple countries. He also became an AST Trainer with the Specialty Coffee Association and continued judging world-sanctioned competitions.
From barista to roaster, competitor to entrepreneur, Suhaimi’s journey reflects a lifelong commitment to coffee. Today, he remains dedicated to elevating the craft, growing Dutch Colony, and inspiring the next generation of coffee professionals.

Coffee in Singapore is a story of people, tradition, and change. It’s the kopitiam uncle pouring kopi with practiced ease, the barista in a specialty café adjusting the grind for the perfect espresso, and the entrepreneur turning a dream into a café. It’s a city where old and new sit side by side, where a strong kopi O belongs just as much as a delicate pour-over.
Kopi, Coffee & Craft is a personal journey through this world, exploring what coffee

Kopi, Coffee & Craft is a personal journey through this world, exploring what coffee means as a drink, a craft, and a way to bring people together. This book is also about what it takes to build a life in coffee. I take you behind the counter and into the daily lives of baristas and café owners, where long hours, early mornings, and an unwavering commitment to quality shape everything they do. I share the discipline, skill, and resilience needed to thrive in this industry, along with my own experiences in the high-stakes world of barista championships, where precision, storytelling, and taste all come together in a matter of minutes.
A big part of my journey has been Dutch Colony Coffee Co., where I became a co-partner. I take you behind the scenes of building this coffee brand, from developing a roasting philosophy to training a team to creating a space where people come together over a shared love for coffee.
Singapore’s coffee culture keeps growing and changing, but one thing stays the same. Whether it’s a cup of kopi at a hawker stall or a carefully brewed V60 in a café, every cup holds a story.
This is mine.
