Educated at Holy Trinity School (Tawau) and St. Mary’s School (Sandakan), his formative years were shaped by the post-war era and the values of discipline, faith, and resilience. He now resides in Kota Kinabalu with his family.
Mr. Lai began his career in business before entering the teaching profession in 1967. Over three decades, he served at SMK Abdullah (Semporna), SMK Kuhara (Tawau), and later as Headmaster of SRK St. Patrick (Tawau) from 1983 until his retirement in 1998. He later continued public service as Vice-President and Deputy President of the Sabah Government Pensioner Association until 2023, where he represented the voice of retired civil servants with integrity and commitment.
His enduring passion lies in storytelling, history, and education. Bryan Paul Lai has published a series of memoirs and historical reflections that document the social, cultural, and educational evolution of Tawau and Sabah. His works include The Joy of Life, The Joy of Life (Second Edition), A Glance of Tawau in the Sixties, A Glance of Tawau in the Old Days, Moving On, and Shadows of Time. These books preserve fading memories and offer younger generations a window into Sabah’s unique journey.
In recognition of his lifelong contributions to education and community service, Mr. Lai was awarded the Pingat Pangkuan Negara (PPN) in 1990, the Ahli Darjah Kinabalu (ADK) in 2002, and the Medal for Meritorious Service (MPMS) in 2002. These honours reflect both federal and state acknowledgment of his distinguished service.
