The Swami family had been living in Salem region since a long time. But the family had suffered a great loss in 1880s. Swami sampradaya was the result of the Swami family which was formed after the great
loss in 1880s. During 1882, there was a Hindu family namely Swami family lived in Salem. Salem was located in Madras Presidency during 1882 and is
currently (2023) located in Tamil Nadu, India.
The history of the Swami sampradaya started with Salem riots of 1882. The Salem riots of 1882 were serious Hindu-Muslim disturbances which
took place in the city of Salem in August 1882. The riots had almost destroyed the Swami family. The Swami family was one of the Hindu families in the region. The Swami family suffered a lot due the riots. The Swami family lost almost all family members, family honour (women were disrespected to a very great extent) and all family assets along with other Hindu
victims. Therefore, the Swami family started to follow the ancient Hindu traditions which the ancestors and ancestresses had kept as a valuable treasure. Harahari Swami started a sampradaya to continue the “Swami
family” legacy with all the rules and regulations of the Swami family. Harahari Swami named the sampradaya as “Swami Sampradaya”.
