Submitted to Contest #2 in response to the prompt: 'The lines between fiction and reality get blurred when your character starts writing a new book.'

Adara was living the same life in her dorm. She woke up early, got dressed, and left for class. Her roommate, Kelsey wasn’t the brightest, but was kind to a great extent. Adara however, was not quite fascinated with the surroundings of her school. As an escape from the monotonous setting of the place, she would sit down during the night with her laptop and would write stories.

One night as she sat down, she began to imagine all the plots and turns of her writing, coming to life as waves in front of her. As she dreamt, she dozed off into a short nap. She woke up with a jolt, after quite an interesting dream. She dreamt that whatever she wrote in her text, was actually happening the next day. Struck by her ‘meaningless’ thought, she closed her laptop and went to sleep. She couldn’t help but shake the thought of how her dream felt quite odd. It didn’t feel like a dream at all; a vision is what she felt it was.

Excerpts from Adara’s novel

“The young girl, Matilda, would skip all day around the palace gates, hoping someday she would reach inside, not as a visitor, but as a princess.”

“On the day she met her prince charming, he was brutally slaughtered by the gruesome dragon of the east. Matilda watched in despair as the love of her life was now blood and burnt flesh.”

“Her voyage ended at the peak of the Creseda Mountains, as her last breath held onto her lover’s shorn cape, the only thing spared of the brutality of the monster. She shed a tear, which turned crystal in the glacial temperatures. Her skin was pale and frostbitten, she whispered her lover’s name under the layers of sorrow and snow. At least she was a princess.”
— —

The following week, she received the weekly newspapers, which Kelsey collected from the library; it was her turn this week. “Here Nerdo, the teacher seemed all slouchy and stuff. She said you would be ‘stunned’ by the news today.” said Kelsey.

Adara held the paper and her eyes widened in awe as she read.

Local Headlines

A Stunner for all

The Prince of Qenderland was found brutally killed near the mountains of the west. His body was found wrapped in a strange ash near the emerald lake as if it had been dropped from a great height. Princess Matilda is still not found. Presumed dead, the arrangements for her funeral have begun at the palace. The authorities will be on the search for any signs of her body for the next week.

The cause of their death is still unknown, however, the only theory we have until now is of the sorcerer of the kingdom. “My Prince has been slaughtered by the Dragon and the dear Princess has been bitten by the devils of the cold. They are gone darlings, because of that ruthless Dragon. I WILL AVENGE THEIR SOULS ALLAS!”
_____

Adara slammed the papers onto the ground and rushed toward her table. She opened up her laptop and went to her novel.
“How is this possible? This is a coincidence, simply must be. Did I predict the future?!”

She further searched about the news but was shocked to see no signs of the royal characters before the day of the announcement. She asked many people, but they just said they didn’t know much and believed that the Kingdom of Qenderland had existed since the 17th century; however, not many knew of the rulers.

Her confusion and fear grew to great heights as she explored. She sat down in the evening at her desk and began to continue her novel, making it worse.
_________
“The dragon mercilessly flew into the borders of the sacred kingdom, demolishing everything in its path. His greed and lust for power grew each moment as he wrecked all the buildings in his way. He ruthlessly breathed fire upon all structures and people, leaving people hopeless and in despair as they watched their homes and families get vanquished by the bloodthirsty dragon.”
_________

“This is brutal enough, this can't possibly ever come true.” Adara thought to herself as she once again dozed off, only to end up with horrible dreams of all these blasphemous events coming to life.
She woke up with her head heavy and aching severely. Her eyes spun and were all blurry. She got out of bed and splashed some water onto her face. As she went back to the room, she saw Kelsey with her bags packed sitting on her chair. She looked worried.

“Kelsey, what’s wrong? Why are you so worried?”
“Didn’t you hear sleepyhead?”
“Hear what?”
“The news…”
“You’re not helping Kelsey!”

“The kingdom of Qenderland has been demolished, horribly. More than half of the people are dead. Some ‘creature’ described as a fire-breathing dragon did this. It sounds obnoxious but it's true. We all have to move back home for safety purposes. Get packed…”

Adara couldn't believe this. She ran over to her desk and searched. Looking at the pictures in awe, she saw exactly what her book had. All the events, descriptions, and sights were exactly like her book. She shed a tear knowing she was fully responsible for this. But why?

She rushed to the library and searched through each aisle to find something that would help. All she found was a dusty and torn page in the back of the library’s most unloved aisle. She held it up and gasped as she read.

“One who seeks me may find me, it is true. I may hold the truth that you have longed. Look beyond your pages, you are gifted. Now it is your choice child; is this a gift or a curse for you? Decide on your own, for what once is written cannot be undone. Good luck child, however, fix all your crude decisions while aware nothing can be redone.”

She knew what it all meant. She now had the power of destiny in her hands. She couldn’t undo all the terrible events that she had been in charge of, but she could fix it, right?

She rushed to a desk and with tearful eyes opened her story. She wrote something that didn’t undo, but fixed.
____
The ground broke and the prince and princess arose, not as humans but as angels. They fought against the barbaric dragon and ended its reign once and for all. They blessed the souls of all who were lost, and their love continued to live on as a shield for the Kingdom of Qenderland.
____

She prayed to the gods, hoping that this would work, and it did. She looked out the window of her library and saw from afar, the battle of the Kingdom. Though she knew the future, she prayed with her eyes closed for victory. As she saw, the kingdom was restored its once-lost peace, not completely, but somehow, it was.

Now aware of the consequences of letting her vicious thoughts leak, she used her power wisely and only for the good. She knew that she would never be mistaken again, since the line between fiction and reality was now all in her hands.
