Submitted to Contest #2 in response to the prompt: 'The lines between fiction and reality get blurred when your character starts writing a new book.'

t was a bright Friday afternoon in the town of Maple Creek, where the air smelled like fresh-cut grass and sunshine, and school had just let out. For Chad and his three best friends—Max, Theo, and Lily—it meant only one thing: freedom.

“Weekend time, baby!” Chad shouted, tossing his backpack into the air.

“Let the fun begin!” Lily high-fived him as Max caught the flying backpack before it hit the ground.

Theo adjusted his glasses and grinned. “We’ve got 48 hours to make history. What’s the plan?”

Chad, the de facto leader of the group and the master of spontaneous fun, smirked like a movie villain. “Boys and girl,” he said, “get ready for the greatest adventure of our lives.”

Chapter 1: The Plan
Chad’s plans were never ordinary. He didn’t believe in sitting at home and playing video games all weekend. He believed in experiences—real ones, messy ones, loud and unforgettable ones.

“We’re going to build a floating raft,” Chad announced.

“A what?” Max blinked.

“A raft. Like Tom Sawyer. And we’re going to sail it down Maple River.”

Theo scratched his head. “The same river where raccoons stole our snacks last year?”

“Exactly,” Chad said with a wink. “Revenge.”

Lily looked skeptical. “And how are we going to build this raft?”

Chad pulled out a wrinkled paper from his hoodie. It was a hand-drawn sketch that looked like a pizza box after art class.

“I call it ‘The Chadliner 2000.’”

They all burst into laughter, but no one said no.

Chapter 2: Gathering Supplies
The next morning, the gang met at Chad’s garage. It was more of a workshop-meets-junkyard. Old bikes, rusty buckets, tennis rackets, and what might have been a birdhouse in its past life filled the corners.

“We’ll need barrels, planks, rope, and snacks. Lots of snacks,” Chad said, ticking things off his list.

Theo’s dad owned a hardware store, so he ‘borrowed’ some old wooden planks. Max convinced his neighbor to donate plastic barrels. Lily raided her mom’s pantry for peanut butter, crackers, and juice boxes. Chad, being Chad, brought four pool noodles and a garden gnome named Winston.

“Winston’s our good luck charm,” he declared, strapping the gnome to the front of the raft like a pirate ship figurehead.

Chapter 3: The Construction Mayhem
Building the raft was less “engineer precision” and more “trial and hilarious error.”

Max accidentally hammered his thumb, Theo got stuck under a pile of planks, and Lily’s dog ran off with the rope. Chad, covered in duct tape and paint, directed them like a wild orchestra conductor.

But by sunset, “The Chadliner 2000” was complete. It looked like something out of a cartoon, with uneven barrels, crooked planks, and Winston the gnome proudly perched at the front.

“It floats… right?” Lily asked.

Chad tossed a bottle of soda onto the raft. It didn’t sink.

“Close enough.”

Chapter 4: Set Sail!
Sunday morning arrived with excitement buzzing in the air. The group hauled the raft to Maple River.

“Alright, crew,” Chad said, putting on a pirate hat, “let’s conquer the high seas of Maple!”

They pushed off, and to everyone’s surprise… it floated!

Lily took the oar, Theo navigated using a phone GPS app, Max played music from a waterproof speaker, and Chad stood at the front like George Washington on the dollar bill.

“This is AMAZING!” Lily shouted.

They floated peacefully past trees, turtles sunbathing on logs, and the occasional duck giving them a side-eye. For two hours, the world felt like theirs alone.

Until… chaos hit.

Chapter 5: The Raccoon Incident
Out of nowhere, a rustle from the bushes.

“I swear if that’s a raccoon—” Max started.

It was.

Not one, but five raccoons.

“Battle stations!” Chad yelled.

The raccoons leapt onto the raft like tiny pirates, headed straight for the snack box. Lily defended with a paddle, Max tried to distract them with music, and Theo threw crackers in the water hoping they’d jump ship.

It was a mess. One raccoon stole the juice boxes. Another tried to take Winston. Chad tackled it heroically.

After five minutes of absolute chaos, the raccoons leapt off, victorious, snack stash in paw.

“We lost the juice boxes,” Theo panted.

“But we still have the gnome,” Chad said, holding up Winston triumphantly.

Chapter 6: Lost and Found
After the raccoon ambush, things calmed down—until they realized something terrifying.

“Wait,” Lily said, looking around. “Where are we?”

The river had split, and they’d taken a wrong turn. The surroundings looked unfamiliar and wild.

“We’re… lost,” Theo whispered.

“No we’re not,” Chad said confidently. “We’re… exploring!”

Max wasn’t convinced. “Do explorers usually end up with no signal and peanut butter for dinner?”

They drifted until they saw a small island in the river. It was covered in tall grass, trees, and one old tire swing.

“Land ho!” Chad shouted. “We camp here!”

Chapter 7: Camp Chad
They named the island “Camp Chad” and built a mini shelter from driftwood. They lit a tiny campfire using a magnifying glass and the sun (Theo’s genius idea), and roasted crackers with peanut butter.

They talked for hours, sharing stories, jokes, and dreams.

Theo wanted to build robots.

Lily wanted to write fantasy novels.

Max dreamed of traveling the world.

Chad? He just wanted life to always be this fun.

Under the stars, they made a pact: One adventure every month, no matter what.

Chapter 8: The Rescue Mission
The next morning, they heard voices.

“CHAD! MAX! LILY! THEO!”

It was Chad’s sister and their parents on the riverbank.

“We’re saved!” Max said.

“Or busted,” Lily added.

They paddled back with whatever dignity they had left, looking like river pirates. Their parents stared at them, half-relieved, half-shocked.

“You built… that?” Chad’s mom asked.

Chad grinned. “The Chadliner 2000.”

She shook her head, but smiled.

Chapter 9: The Legend Lives On
By Monday morning, the story of their raft adventure had spread through school like wildfire. Kids were high-fiving them in the hallway. Someone started a fan club for Winston the gnome.

The principal called them into the office. They thought they were in trouble.

Instead, he said, “You kids have spirit. Next month, we’re starting an Outdoor Skills Club. Want to help lead it?”

Chad looked at his friends. “Only if we get to name the club.”

Epilogue: Fun Never Ends
They named it The Fellowship of the Raft.

And from that weekend on, Chad and his friends had adventure after adventure—some big, some small, but always with laughter, teamwork, and a touch of chaos.

Because with good friends, even the craziest ideas become the best memories.

And Winston the gnome? He still rides proudly at the front of every journey.
