Submitted to Contest #2 in response to the prompt: 'Write a story about your character finding a mysterious message hidden in an old book.'

Bella, a plant scientist, was now living in an old, empty lighthouse on a small, rocky island. She'd been shipwrecked there. The wind and sea were her only company. It was a hard, lonely place, far from her usual quiet world of plants and flowers. A big wave had sunk her boat, leaving her stuck on this isolated tower by the sea.
Days and nights passed slowly. Bella used her little food carefully. She walked around the small island, looking at the tough plants. It was something familiar in this strange place. She always looked at the sea, hoping for a boat.
One stormy night, the waves crashed hard. Bella went to the top of the lighthouse. The wind screamed. But the stone walls felt strong. In the mess on the floor, she saw something old.
It was a small, old book. Its cover was falling apart. Bella picked it up. The pages inside were yellow. She carefully turned them. There were drawings of stars and handwritten words she couldn't read well.
Tucked between two pages, she found a small piece of paper. It was folded up very small. The paper felt thin and old.
Carefully, Bella opened it. There were a few words written in strange writing:
"When the stone eye cries under the watching bird, follow the shadow where the wild thyme is heard."
Bella didn't understand. What was the "stone eye"? She had seen a big rock that looked like an eye. And there were birds everywhere.
What was "the shadow where the wild thyme is heard"? Wild thyme was a small, nice-smelling plant that grew on the west side of the island.
Bella felt a little interested. It was something to think about. The storm became a light rain. The island was grey. Bella decided to find out what the message meant.
Bella went down to the rocky shore. She looked for the "stone eye." She found it easily. It was a big rock facing the sea. A seagull landed on top. Then, Bella saw water running down the rock, like a tear. The stone eye was crying.
She looked at the shadow made by the rock. It pointed towards the west side of the island. Bella walked that way. The air smelled like wild thyme.
The shadow got longer. It pointed to a small crack in the cliff, hidden by the thyme plants. Bella moved the plants and looked inside.
The crack led to a small, safe space. There, among smooth stones, was a small wooden box. It looked old.
Bella's heart beat fast. Could this be it? What was the message about?
With shaky hands, she opened the box. Inside, on some dried seaweed, was a small wooden bird. Its wings were spread out. And under it, another piece of paper. This one was bigger and newer.
It was a note in writing she knew – her father's. He had studied the sea and often traveled alone. The note said he had been stuck on this same island years ago. He had left the book and the message to help anyone else who got stuck. The wooden bird was a sign of hope. The note also said where to find fresh water inland, something Bella really needed.
Bella felt very relieved. The message wasn't about treasure, but about help from someone who knew the island. The old book wasn't magic, but a way to connect with the past.
Bella followed her father's directions to the water. She felt hopeful again. She was still stuck, but now she had fresh water and felt less alone. The old lighthouse, which had seemed so sad, now felt a bit like home. Bella, the plant scientist lost at sea, had found not just a message, but a reminder to be strong and the kindness of her father. Her name, Bella, meaning beautiful, now meant the quiet beauty of surviving and the surprising help from the past.
Days turned into a week. Bella worked tirelessly, her botanist's hands now skilled in the rough work of gathering wood and stacking stones. The old book, now more than just a mystery, became a comforting presence. Sometimes, in the quiet evenings, she would look at the faded star charts, imagining her father doing the same, finding solace in the vastness of the universe even when stranded on a tiny island.
One clear morning, as the sun painted the sky in hues of orange and pink, Bella stood on the highest point of the island, a small column of smoke rising steadily from her carefully constructed fire. She watched the horizon, her heart pounding with a mixture of hope and fear.
Hours crawled by. Just when despair started to creep in again, a tiny speck appeared on the distant horizon. It grew larger, slowly but surely, until it became a fishing boat, its engine a welcome roar in the endless symphony of the sea.Tears streamed down Bella's face as the boat drew closer. She waved her arms frantically, shouting until her voice was hoarse. The fishermen spotted her smoke signal. Relief washed over her, so powerful it almost buckled her knees.
As they helped her onto the boat, one of the fishermen pointed to the small, old book clutched in her hand. "What's that you've got there, miss?" he asked kindly.
Bella smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that hadn't touched her face in weeks. "It's a message," she said, her voice still a little shaky. "A message from the past that helped me find my way back."
Looking back at the receding island, with its silent lighthouse standing guard, Bella knew she would never forget this place. It had been a prison, but also a teacher. It had shown her her own resilience, and the unexpected kindness that can reach across time, hidden in the pages of an old book and the whispers of the wind. Her name, Bella, once a lonely echo, now felt like a quiet song of survival and hope, carried on the sea breeze towards a new horizon.
