Submitted to Contest #2 in response to the prompt: 'Write about the moment your character decided to write their own story.'

Hi, I am Jia.
I’m just a regular chick, nothing much interesting about me.
Or yes, one thing is — I am a writer, writing a book.
A book about a girl named Sia and her love story — how she met a boy named Raj.
It’s a love story about how two people met, fell in love, and found their paradise — their happily ever after.

Sia is the main protagonist. She is a lovely, bubbly girl who loves fun. Everyone loves her, and she loves everyone.
A typical next-door girl.
Well, they are getting married, Sia and Raj, soon.

Raj is a typical guy — cute and handsome, a little too bossy, and he owns a family business worth 10 crores.
Raj is a little rude with his staff but is a good-hearted guy.
Sia is unemployed, as her dad doesn’t want her to do a job, but she is well-educated.
Her dad has a pretty well-off business.

They met in an arranged marriage setup and are about to get married.
Oh no, it's already 11 PM — time for bed. I have a test tomorrow.
I’ll write the rest later on.

Next day —
After my college, I was very tired, but still, I went to write my book, as the deadline is soon.
I was all prepared to write the grand wedding chapter, but I was shocked.
When I read the last chapter to get in the flow, it read that the marriage was cancelled.
But how can this happen? I never wrote this!
Or maybe I did — I slept late. Maybe.

Whatever, I cancelled the last chapter and wrote a fresh one.

Sia and Raj were very happy and excited.
It was a grand affair of three days.
On Day 1, there was a Haldi function where both families were present.
The courtyard was filled with laughter, bright yellow outfits, and playful teasing between the two families.
Day 2 was the Mehendi function where henna was applied on everyone’s hands with a cute hashtag — #Siraj.
Sia giggled as Raj secretly sneaked in to find his name hidden in her intricate mehendi design.
Day 3 was the wedding where they took their wedding vows.

With the presence of friends and family, they had lots of fun.
Those three days they will remember for a lifetime.
Oh yeah, there was a little bit of a problem, but that’s fine — Sia’s dad took hold of the situation.

They went to Singapore for their honeymoon.

Now to the honeymoon chapter.
But it’s late — I’m going to write tomorrow or in a few days, as I have a real wedding to attend.

Wow, it was my cousin’s wedding — we had such a blast!
Now, back to writing.

I had to write the honeymoon chapter and needed to make sure it’s not too steamy.
Wait, what? How?
I wrote about their marriage — I knew I did.
Who wrote about the honeymoon?
It was supposed to be lovey-dovey.

What crap someone has written!
I was tense and decided to wait till tomorrow to see who was writing all this.
I stayed awake all night, only to see the pen magically lifted and writing on its own.
My heart raced as the words flowed across the page without anyone touching it.
I let it happen until the story said "The End."
It made me realize — Sia was the one writing all the chapters.

After the marriage, they did go on their honeymoon, but they had a huge fight.
This was their second fight.
They fought over Sia's skirt — just a normal knee-length skirt.

Someone stared at Sia, which enraged Raj.
He went to the bar and drank a lot.

Later, he came to the hotel room where Sia was very tense about his well-being, as she didn’t know about Raj's anger or someone staring at her.
As Raj stumbled in, his eyes bloodshot and fists clenched, Sia felt a chill run down her spine.

As a girl, someone staring at her is part of her life — something every girl grows up with.
But Raj was raging with alcohol in his body.

Sia tried to talk sense into him but in vain.
Raj held her tightly and snatched Sia’s skirt.
Now Sia’s underwear was completely exposed.
Gasping, she tried to cover herself, her cheeks burning with humiliation.
When she tried to speak, Raj slapped her hard and threw her out of the room.

Sia was beyond shocked.
She stood trembling in the cold hotel corridor, her hands clutching the hem of her long shirt.
She was in an unknown country with no money, but thankfully, her shirt was a bit long.
Tears blurred her vision as she slid down the wall, curling up on the hard floor outside the room.
She hugged her knees tightly, wishing for morning to come faster.

In the morning, Raj behaved as if nothing had happened, all sweet and roses.
Sia forced a smile, but inside, her heart had already started breaking.
But Sia didn't forgive.
Still, she decided to give him a chance.

They came home after their honeymoon.
Raj’s behavior changed.
He started treating Sia poorly.
It wasn’t physical, but mentally, things were taking a toll on her.

Raj didn’t speak to her properly, always pointing out her mistakes.
Sia was confused — what had happened to Raj?

Then one day, Raj came home under the influence of alcohol.
Sia saw a red lipstick mark on Raj’s shirt.

Even before she could say anything, Raj hit her — just because she hadn’t asked him for water, even though he wasn’t even thirsty.

Now Sia had enough.
She asked why.
Raj replied, "You bitch! I only wanted a car for both of us, and your dad didn’t even think of our comfort!"

Sia said, "But they had already gifted us a car."

Raj said, "I wanted a Merc, and your dad gifted us an Innova Toyota."
And again, Raj raised his arm to hit Sia, but this time, she held his hand and ran away.

With her heart pounding, she dashed out of the house, her breath hitching in sobs she could no longer hold back.

She came back home and told everything to her parents.

She told them how she had cancelled the marriage in the first place, but her parents said it was okay to ask for some dowry.
She told her parents Raj and she had already had a big fight before marriage over dowry.
She had said to cancel the marriage, but her parents said it was okay in their community to ask for some dowry.

Now Sia is divorced, living happily with her family, and working in an MNC as a corporate lawyer earning 8 figures.

If I hadn’t re-written the wedding chapter, Sia wouldn’t have had to go through so much pain.
Dowry wasn’t a "little bit of a problem" — it was the beginning of a nightmare.
