Submitted to Contest #3 in response to the prompt: 'A stranger comes to your door. What happens next?'

Sita had long since learned that happily ever after wasn’t a destination—it was a fleeting moment in a world that always kept changing. Five years had passed since her marriage to Ram, the man who had once promised her the stars. Their wedding had been a grand affair, a storybook celebration of love, and for a while, it seemed like a dream.

But over time, the castle grew quiet. Ram became consumed with his duties, endlessly swept away by the demands of the kingdom, while Sita found herself wandering the halls of their grand home, feeling more like a princess trapped in a tower than the queen she had once dreamed of being. The love they shared had faded into a routine, and her heart ached for the spark that had once set her world on fire.

One cold evening, as the sky darkened with an impending storm, Sita found herself alone in the garden, the moonlight casting a silver glow on the roses. She sat on the stone bench, her hands folded in her lap, waiting for a love that had somehow slipped away.

Suddenly, there was a knock at the door.

It was unexpected—a sharp, insistent sound. Sita stood, confused. She glanced at the clock; it was far past midnight. Who could be calling at this hour?

When she opened the door, she gasped.

A man stood there, drenched in rain. His hair was wet, and his cloak clung to his frame, dripping onto the stone floor. His face was familiar, yet there was something different about him—something that made her heart race in her chest.

“Ram?” she whispered, her voice shaking.

He looked at her with wide, searching eyes. “Sita, it’s me. But not the man you know.”

Sita blinked, unable to comprehend what he was saying. “What do you mean? You are Ram.”

He shook his head slowly. “I was the Ram you married. But I was taken from you long ago, trapped in another world—a world where time doesn’t pass the same. I was lost in a place between worlds. The man you’ve been living with... he’s a shadow. A version of me, created to take my place while I was gone.”

Sita’s knees weakened as the weight of his words hit her. She reached out, grasping the doorframe for support. “But... how? How can this be?”

“I’ve been searching for a way back,” Ram said, his voice urgent. “For years. Every moment I’ve spent here has been a fight to remember you, to hold onto the love we shared. And now, I’ve found a way back.”

Sita felt as though the ground beneath her was shifting. Her heart ached with confusion, disbelief, and longing. The man she had loved—had thought she was still living with—wasn’t the real Ram. She had lived with a shadow, a copy of the man who had once meant everything to her.

“What do I do?” Sita whispered, her voice breaking. “I’ve lost so much already.”

“You haven’t lost anything,” Ram said softly, his gaze tender and full of pain. “I’m here now. And I came back for you.”

Sita didn’t know what to say. Her world had turned upside down, and yet, she could feel the truth in his words. The love she had for him, the bond that had once been so strong, was still there—waiting to be rekindled.

“I don’t want to go back to that life,” Sita said, her voice firm, though her heart was trembling. “The man I thought was my husband... he wasn’t him. I don’t want to live a life that isn’t real anymore.”

Ram stepped closer, gently taking her hand. “Then come with me. We can leave all of this behind. We can go to the world I’ve been trapped in, the one where I was lost. There, we can start again.”

With a deep breath, Sita nodded. “I’ll go with you. I don’t want to live in the shadows of what could have been. I want to find the love we were meant to have.”

Ram smiled, and for the first time in years, Sita felt the warmth of his love surround her. Together, they walked into the night, through the pouring rain, and into the unknown.

They came to a clearing in the forest, where a glowing portal stood—an arch of shimmering light that pulsed with energy. Ram turned to her, his eyes filled with both hope and sorrow. “This is it. This is the way.”

Sita’s heart raced. She looked back at the life she had left behind—the palace, the throne, the life of duty she had known. But none of it mattered now. Not when the man she had always loved was standing before her, offering her a chance at something real.

She took his hand, and together, they stepped through the portal.

The world around them shifted. The air changed. They found themselves in a land unlike any they had ever seen—where the sky was streaked with colors Sita had never imagined, and the ground beneath their feet hummed with ancient magic. Strange creatures roamed the wild landscape, and in the distance, tall trees reached up to the sky, their leaves glowing faintly in the twilight.

“This is my world,” Ram said softly. “The world I was lost in. And now, it’s our world.”

Sita’s breath caught in her chest. She looked around, feeling a strange peace settle over her. This world was foreign, yes, but it felt like a new beginning. A place where she could finally rediscover herself and the love she had always known was hers.

“Together, we can build a life here,” Ram said, his voice full of promise. “No more shadows, no more doubts. Just us.”

Sita smiled, tears welling in her eyes, and for the first time in years, she felt truly alive. “Together,” she whispered.

Hand in hand, they walked into the new world, leaving behind the remnants of a life they no longer needed. And in that moment, they knew—this was where their true journey began.
