Submitted to Contest #3 in response to the prompt: 'Your character wakes up in a different world. What do they do?'

Elara’s eyes fluttered open, the first thing she noticed being the faint hum of the wind. The air was different—crisp and vibrant, filled with the scent of something she couldn’t name. She blinked, her surroundings slowly coming into focus. The bed beneath her was soft, unlike any she had ever felt, the sheets a golden hue that seemed to shimmer in the soft light filtering through the window. But it was the window itself that drew her attention.

Beyond the glass, the sky stretched in hues of lavender and peach, the sun low on the horizon, casting an ethereal glow across the landscape. Rolling hills covered in a blanket of wildflowers, trees that shimmered with silver leaves, and streams that glittered like liquid diamonds. It was... otherworldly.

Elara sat up, her head spinning with the suddenness of her awakening. She had been in her room just moments ago, preparing for a quiet evening with a book. How had she gotten here? Was she dreaming? The thought of pinching herself crossed her mind, but there was no discomfort in the strange new world around her. The soft breeze, the colors, the very air—it all felt... real.

She stood up carefully, taking a step toward the window. Her feet brushed against a soft carpet, and as she approached, the window swung open effortlessly. Without hesitation, she stepped outside onto the veranda, drawn by an invisible pull, as though something deep within her knew she was meant to be here.

The world was silent, save for the wind. But it was a peaceful silence, like the world was holding its breath, waiting. Elara’s heart raced in her chest. She wasn’t sure what to do next. How had she arrived here? And more importantly, where was she?

But then she noticed something else—soft, golden light flickering at the edge of the meadow. It moved in delicate patterns, like fireflies but brighter, more deliberate. Elara followed it instinctively, her feet moving almost of their own accord. As she walked closer, the lights began to take shape. They were tiny beings, no taller than her knee, their forms delicate and translucent, with wings that glowed like moonlight.

“Elara,” one of them said, its voice like the rustling of leaves. It had no mouth, but the words resonated in her mind. “Welcome to Valara.”

Her breath caught in her throat. “Valara?” she whispered, testing the name. “Where is that?”

“You have crossed the veil,” the being said. “From your world into this one. A world that exists between dreams and waking. A place where souls find their purpose.”

Elara’s mind swirled with questions. “But why am I here? I don’t belong here.”

“You do, Elara,” another voice chimed in, and Elara turned to see a second being, this one with wings that sparkled like stardust. “You have come to remember. To rediscover who you truly are.”

Before Elara could respond, the beings began to move, beckoning her to follow. She hesitated for a moment, her feet rooted to the soft earth beneath her. Her heart told her to stay, but a quiet voice within her whispered, This is where you belong. Without fully understanding why, she followed them.

The journey through the meadow was peaceful, almost meditative. The golden beings flitted around her, their voices filling the air with soft melodies that made Elara’s chest feel lighter with every step. She couldn’t explain it, but she felt at home, as if she had always belonged in this place.

Finally, they reached a large, ancient tree at the center of the meadow. Its trunk was vast, with roots that seemed to stretch deep into the earth. The branches spread wide, covered in shimmering leaves, and at its base was a pool of water that glowed with a soft, blue light.

“This is the Heart of Valara,” the first being said. “It is where the truth of your soul is revealed.”

Elara stared into the pool, unsure of what to expect. Her reflection shimmered on the surface, but as she gazed deeper, something changed. The reflection began to shift, showing her not as she was, but as she had been: a young girl, full of wonder and laughter, chasing dreams in a world that was far less kind than this one. She saw herself at different moments of her life—lost, searching, yearning for something she couldn’t name.

A tear slipped down her cheek as she realized what had been missing. She had been searching for peace, for a place where she could belong, where she could feel seen. And here, in this strange, beautiful world, she was seen.

“The journey to your true self begins here,” the second being said gently. “You will remember the life you’ve forgotten. The lessons you’ve learned and the wisdom you’ve yet to understand.”

Elara closed her eyes, allowing the soft hum of the world to wash over her. The light, the air, the sounds—they all intertwined, like a gentle lullaby that soothed her very soul. For the first time in what felt like forever, she allowed herself to simply be. To not worry about what she had left behind or what the future might hold. To let go of the constant need to search for something more.

The beings fluttered around her, their lights becoming brighter and more intense, enveloping her in warmth. She felt herself becoming one with the world, her heart aligned with the rhythm of the earth. In this place, there was no fear, no longing, only acceptance.

A soft voice, almost like a whisper in the wind, echoed in her mind. “You were always here, Elara. And you will always be.”
