Submitted to Contest #3 in response to the prompt: 'Your character wakes up in a different world. What do they do?'

I’ve always thought of myself as a normal teenager. Wake up, go to school, do homework, listen to boring lectures, scroll through my phone, sleep — repeat. But everything changed the morning I woke up… somewhere else.

The first thing I noticed was the smell — not the usual mix of dust and mosquito repellent in my room. This smelled like fresh roses, cinnamon, and something I couldn’t quite describe… like the air after rain. I blinked and sat up slowly, expecting to see my bookshelf and the faded poster of a spaceship on my wall. But instead, there was a high ceiling made of glass, sparkling with tiny lights like stars.

“Where… am I?” I whispered.

I looked around. The bed was soft, covered with smooth silk sheets. The walls were glowing with a soft purple light. I walked to a window — if you could even call it that — and gasped.

The sky outside was deep violet, with two suns shining brightly. One was golden, the other a gentle pink. Silver trees swayed in the wind, and giant mushrooms glowed softly in the distance. Strange birds with long feathers and glowing tails flew in patterns I’d only seen in dreams. In the sky above, I saw floating islands, with waterfalls falling off their edges and disappearing into clouds.

I was about to panic when a small door slid open with a soft hum. In rolled a robot, about the size of a schoolbag. It had a round metal body, blinking eyes, and small arms.

“Good morning, Earthling!” it chirped.

“Earthling?” I blinked.

“Yes! You are on Zephyria, the land of dreams and light. You were chosen.”

“Chosen? For what? How did I even get here?” I asked, confused and a little afraid.

The robot didn’t answer. Instead, it whirred and beeped, and suddenly, the floor lit up beneath me. I tried to step back, but before I could react, I was lifted gently into the air by a column of light.

In moments, I found myself standing in a grand hall. The floor shimmered like a mirror, and tall crystal pillars lined the room. At the end stood a tall woman with silver eyes and a crown of glowing flowers. Her dress flowed like liquid light.

“I am Queen Seraya, ruler of Zephyria,” she said in a soft, echoing voice. “And you, child of Earth, have been chosen to save our world.”

“Me? But… I’m just a student. I don’t have powers. I can’t even pass maths without a calculator.”

She smiled kindly. “That is exactly why you were chosen. The Dream Tree, heart of Zephyria, is dying. Only someone with a pure heart, with dreams untouched by greed, can bring it back to life.”

She held out her hand, and in it appeared a glowing seed, warm and humming with energy.

“Take this. Plant it in the Heart Forest, at the base of the Dream Tree. Let your thoughts be pure and your courage strong. That is all we ask.”

I hesitated. This all felt like a fantasy video game. But something inside me told me it was real. I took the seed, and the moment I did, a path of light appeared before me, leading out of the hall.

The journey ahead was nothing like I had imagined.

Chapter 2: Trials of Light

I walked through glowing meadows, across floating bridges, and under skies filled with dancing lights. But the path wasn’t easy.

The first trial came in the form of a river. Not water — but light, flowing like liquid gold. There was no boat, no bridge. Just a riddle carved into a stone at the shore:

"What moves without legs, speaks without a mouth, and can pass through walls without a sound?"

I thought hard. It reminded me of something from a poem. Then it hit me — light. I whispered the word aloud.

The river parted, forming a glowing path across it.

Next, I entered a forest where the trees whispered. At first, I was curious, but soon the voices grew louder — mocking me, reminding me of my failures. "You’re not brave. You always doubt yourself. You’re weak."

I almost turned back. But then I remembered what Queen Seraya had said — “Let your thoughts be pure.” I took a deep breath and said firmly, “I may be scared, but I’m not giving up.”

Suddenly, the whispers faded, and the trees bowed as if in respect.

The final trial came at the edge of the Heart Forest — a guardian in the form of a giant bird made of stars. Its voice boomed, “Why should Zephyria trust you?”

I looked at the seed in my hand. It pulsed gently, waiting.

“I don’t know everything. I make mistakes. But I believe in kindness, and I believe dreams can change the world,” I said.

The bird studied me for a moment, then lifted its wings and let me pass.

Chapter 3: The Dream Tree

At the center of the forest stood the Dream Tree. It was ancient, taller than any building I had ever seen. But its leaves were falling, its branches brittle. The ground around it was dark and dry.

I knelt at the base and dug a small hole. I placed the seed inside and covered it with soil.

“Please,” I whispered. “Let this work.”

I closed my eyes and thought of everything I loved — my family, my friends, the books that gave me hope, the stars I looked at when I felt lonely. I thought of dreams — becoming someone who mattered, someone who helped, even in small ways.

Suddenly, the ground began to shake. The seed glowed so bright I had to cover my eyes. The Dream Tree lit up — leaves returned, glowing with colors I’d never seen. Flowers bloomed in spirals, and the sky exploded with golden light.

Zephyria was alive again.

I felt a rush of wind, and everything began to blur.

Chapter 4: The Return

I woke up in my own bed.

The room was just as it had always been — posters, books, dusty light. For a moment, I wondered if it had all been a dream.

But on my desk was a single silver feather, glowing softly.

And on the window, a pattern of stars I had seen only once — in the sky of Zephyria.

Epilogue: A Different Me

Ever since that day, I’ve changed.

I don’t just live to pass time anymore. I live to dream, to hope, to believe. I know now that I matter — even if I’m just one person.

Zephyria may be a world beyond the stars, but maybe, just maybe, the power that saved it exists here too — in kindness, courage, and believing in yourself.

And sometimes, at night, I hold that silver feather and wonder...

Will I go back?
