The first thing Jason noticed was the silence. Not the quiet hum of a city morning or the peaceful hush of a forest—but a silence so complete it made his heartbeat sound like thunder.

His eyes snapped open.

Above him, the sky shimmered—not blue, not gray, but a vibrant, living orange. Swirls of lavender clouds twisted like smoke across a canvas of color. The ground beneath him was soft, mossy, glowing faintly like embers under ash.

Jason sat up, blinking. This wasn’t his apartment. This wasn’t even Earth.

His last memory was ordinary: falling asleep on his couch, half-watching a documentary about wormholes and quantum realities. Now, he sat in the middle of a field that looked like it belonged in a dream—or a hallucination.

“Okay,” he said out loud, voice hoarse. “Okay, Jason. Deep breath. You’ve either gone crazy or—”

A shadow passed overhead. Jason looked up, instinctively ducking. A creature—not a bird, not a plane, but something vast with silver wings and translucent skin—glided through the sky. Its body gleamed in the sunlight, reflecting the colors around it like water.

Jason’s breath caught in his throat. “This is real,” he whispered. “This is real.”

He stood, legs shaky, and turned in a slow circle. In the distance, mountains floated above the horizon, not rooted in the ground but drifting lazily like balloons tethered by mist. Beyond them, strange buildings of crystalline material spiraled into the sky, lit from within by some internal fire.

He had no idea where to go.

A soft chime rang behind him.

Jason turned—and nearly fell over.

A humanoid figure stood there, seven feet tall, clothed in a robe that shimmered like moonlight. Its skin was iridescent, and its face was smooth, featureless, except for two glowing slits where eyes should be.

“Welcome,” it said. Its voice entered his mind directly—no sound, just understanding.

Jason staggered back. “What—what is this place?”

“The Sky Beneath,” it replied.

“That doesn’t… make sense.”

“Few truths do at first,” the being replied. “You fell between.”

“Between?”

“Worlds. Realities. Threads in the loom of existence. You are a wanderer now.”

Jason shook his head. “There has to be a way back.”

“There may be,” it said. “But the path must be earned, not taken.”

“Earned how?”

“Come,” the being gestured. “You must meet the Oracles.”

Jason followed. What choice did he have?

They walked across fields where the grass sang softly underfoot, past rivers of liquid crystal, and through forests where the trees shifted shapes as if alive. Other beings passed them—some like the first one, others utterly alien: floating spheres with eyes, insect-like creatures with musical voices, beings made of light and shadow.

At the edge of a great waterfall, which flowed upward into the sky, the figure stopped.

“The Oracles dwell beyond the Mirrorflow,” it said.

Jason looked at the waterfall, uncertain. “I’m not sure I can swim… upward.”

“You need only step through.”

Hesitantly, Jason approached. As he neared, the waterfall shimmered like glass. When he touched it, there was no resistance—only warmth, like slipping into a dream.

He emerged into a circular chamber with no walls, only swirling constellations all around. Floating in a circle were five beings, each entirely different: one cloaked in flame, one a floating eye surrounded by rings, one made of flowing ink, one with a human face made of stars, and the last a mirror showing Jason’s reflection.

“You seek to return,” they said in unison, voices blending in harmony.

“Yes,” Jason said. “I don’t belong here.”

“You do,” said the mirror.

“You don’t,” said the flame.

“You must choose,” said the star-face. “Learn… or flee.”

Jason swallowed. “Learn what?”

“That not all worlds are meant to be escaped. Some… are meant to change you.”

He looked around. “I didn’t ask to be here.”

“No one does,” said the ink-being.

“But all are called.”

Jason hesitated. This place terrified him—but it also fascinated him. He’d always wanted more than the gray routine of his life. Maybe… this was more.

“Okay,” he said finally. “I’ll stay. For now. I’ll learn.”

The beings nodded.

Then, everything went black.

Jason woke again—but this time he wasn’t lying on moss. He was in a tower of glass, floating above the mountains. His clothes had changed—now a robe like his guide’s, woven with threads of starlight.

A voice spoke in his mind. Welcome, Seeker. Today you begin.

The months passed. Jason learned to communicate with thought, to shape energy into form, to navigate the threads between worlds. He met others like him—humans who had slipped through cracks in reality and found something else.

And slowly, the desire to go back faded.

He didn’t forget Earth. But it no longer felt like home.

One day, while meditating atop a cliff that overlooked a sky full of floating whales, he was joined by the same guide who had found him.

“You have learned well,” it said.

“Thank you.”

“You are ready. The door home can be opened.”

Jason looked at the portal shimmering before him.

But he didn’t move.

“I think…” he said slowly, “I want to stay. There’s more here. I’m not done learning.”

The being nodded. “Then the door will wait.”

As Jason turned away, a smile tugged at his lips. He had awoken in a different world—and discovered himself.
