Submitted to Contest #4 in response to the prompt: 'An unexpected message changes everything. What will you do next?'

Suresh was working in a private business company which exported leather goods all around the world. It was a flourishing business and the owner was a kind hearted person. He treated his employees like his own family, giving bonus to everyone each year. Sometimes, owner used to give two wheelers and cars to employees on their exceptional work. Suresh himself got a car recently for his achievements in the organisation.

Suresh was in HR section. He was a sincere hardworking person and always thought about enhancing the business environment along with employee betterment.

One day a new employee Vivek was enrolled into the company. Vivek was appointed in charge of HR section, as he had higher qualifications. But he was younger than Suresh by age. This made Suresh get upset as he had to work with a boss younger than him.

On his first day in the office, Vivek wanted to meet everyone in the section to get acquainted. Since Suresh was the next seniormost fellow, he called him first.

"Hi Suresh, I am Vivek... Just joined this company today....I wanted to know all of you so that we can work as a team...and take the company to greater levels of achievement."

"Sure sir...I too love this company. It has given everything to us. I got my car last year from the company in addition to bonus. It's a great company that treats employees like family." Suresh replied.

Although Suresh spoke cool with his new boss, he was uncomfortable from within. He didn't like a younger person bossing over him. But never expressed his discontent.

As days passed Suresh was feeling uncomfortable with the boss and wanted to leave the company. But wouldn't get a job easily as his qualifications were not great. He felt bad about himself feeling low in the company, unable to get new job. This started telling on his work quality too.

One day a call came from Vivek. Suresh took the call.

"Hello Suresh...I wanted to talk to you in the early office hours about an important client...but you were not present in your chamber... I had to talk to your junior staff...I request you to please arrive on time to the office...that would be helpful to me and everyone."

"Sorry sir...there was a traffic congestion...so I got a bit late." Suresh replied.

"You came full one hour late....it is not the way to work. please start early from home hereafter".

Suresh got shocked and embarrassed. This was the first time he got bashing from any boss so far in his spotless career. He felt insulted and dejected. He had great name in the company and everyone would respect him so much. He had greatly increased the profit levels of the company in last few years. Because of his capability, the company even got a HR award at National level. But he has now, started developing inferiority complex due to his inability to digest a bit of bashing. But Suresh never showed his displeasure to his boss. Rather, he kept a low profile with Vivek and never missed to be in his good books.

As days passed Suresh's career graph started to fall faster and faster. Vivek noticed this downward transformation of Suresh. He felt pity for him. He thought..."such a wonderful worker excelling in his field... but it's sad that now he is loosing all his skills and abilities...really sad happening". But he was helpless. He thought a lot over the problem. He wanted to help him at any cost.

One day Suresh got a personal but long message from Vivek. It said..."I am quitting this job as I got a wonderful opportunity to serve an MNC... although it is not a higher post, I am happy with the emoluments and perks. You are a nice person and an asset to any organization. Please continue there and you can take the company to among top 10 in the country. I liked your work very much and wanted to meet you in person to express my appreciation. However, I will not be able to do that as I am leaving the headquarters tomorrow itself. Although I scolded you that day, it was for own good. Wish you all the best."

The message was a high voltage surprise for Suresh. In his wildest dreams, he had not thought that Vivek had such an appreciation for him. A thought came to his mind if Vivek sacrificed a good job for Suresh's sake. "A great person Vivek" he thought.

The message from Vivek transformed Suresh's life. He wondered if such people still live in this selfish world. He decided to work hard with all his heart and sincerity. The message changed him completely to become a highly positive person. Thereon he shelved his complex, also encouraged his subordinates in the positive path of excellence. He became even the CEO of the company in just few years after that. Thanks you Vivek.
