The smell of hospital is a mix of smells of medicine, old people, and floor cleaner but that day it was different

I worked as a nurse on the third floor of 'Saint Mark Healthcare Hospital'. Everyday was just the same with me clocking in at 8:30 am and clocking out at 7 pm. The 11 hours of my life everyday was spent in the hospital helping old people get there medicines and help them walk.

One day as I was helping Mrs. Jonathan, a sweet old lady walk after her hip surgery. I liked helping her as she smelled like cookies and always was thankful towards me for helping her. We walked slowly in circles around the nursing station. While helping her walk I smelled something a bit unusual. It was not the floor cleaner or the smell of cookies but it was something else, very aromatic, very hypnotising and very strong. The smell was calling me towards it. I noticed that the smell was coming from room 307 and my curiosity got the best out of me.

I told Mrs. Jonathan: "Let's take a detour today if it is okay with you. Your doctor said it would be great."

She nodded at me happily with the wrinkly smile and I smiled back. Slowly I pulled Mrs. Jonathan towards the rooms and told her that we can walk in larger circles rather than just walking around the station. As we approached the room I tried to peak in and take a look. Unfortunately the door was half shut. All I could see was a the long red hair of a girl lying on the bed as her face was not visible. At this point I could hear Mrs. Jonathan panting and getting tired so I thought I will bring her back to her room and then visit the patient.

After getting Mrs. Jonathan completely laid and rested on her bed and said goodbye and rushed towards the nursing station. I looked at the assigned rooms and saw that room 307 was assigned to me. A smile bloomed on my face. A smile that made other nurses look at me doubtful.

Nurse Bethany from the back looked at smile and asked me: "What is the matter John? Do you need more duty"

I snapped out of the smile and looked at her and laughed awkwardly. I decided to ask Bethany about the lady in room 307.

"Hey Bethany, do you know anything about the girl in room 307." Hearing this she looked at me confused and replied "Isn't that patient assigned to you. Why you asking me?"

"No just curious about when she came in" I said calmly. Bethany replied "She came in yesterday night due to stomach pain and the doctor Elvish is running tests on her now."

I just nodded and decided to go see her. Going empty handed was awkward so I grabbed a cup of water and knocked on her half open door. A feeble voice said 'Come in' As I opened the door fully the girl turned towards the door looking straight into my eyes. The moment our eyes looked at each other I was in love. Her beautiful red eyes, sharp nose and red lips looked like a combination that God himself picked. The red hair covered her ears and her cheeks folding with a smile seeing me mesmerized me right there. I starred into her eyes for about a few second until she said hello.

I awkwardly stood there. Her smile grew bigger and asked me what was it. I went towards her bed and placed the glass on the bed side and introduced myself as her nurse. She happily smiled and said thank you. I could not stop starring at those red eyes just before doctor Elvis came in knocking on the door.

"Jane how are you feeling now?" Doctor Elvis asked. He was followed by 2 residents that he taught. "Fine" answered her charming voice. Jane I need to speak with you privately if you are comfortable. She nodded and we all were asked to leave. I smiled and stepped out. For about half an hour I sat straight in front of the door of room 307 expecting the doctors to leave. Bethany saw me uncomfortably swirling around my chair in the nursing station with my eyes locked on the door. She asked me "So you in love now with a patient". Unknowingly my impulse said yes before I realised it.

Bethany laughed and walked away. Just then the doctors came out. One of the residents gave me a slip with instructions of her medication and drugs. I read the slip and got shocked. The medication where for starting level chemo. I ran towards the room but entered gently. She was lying there crying and looking out of the window towards the setting Sun. I asked her if she was ok and she started crying even more and told me to leave her alone. I stepped out and closed the door but just before that I told her that she can always talk to me whenever she wanted.

I left her undisturbed for the day and she called no one for any help. I delivered her medication on time and gave her some space. I clocked out that night at 9 pm just waiting for her to call and talk but she didn't. I packed my shoulder bag and changed to my normal outfit and picked up my car keys to leave when she suddenly stepped out of the room and starred at me.

I started walking away and she called me from the back saying "I want to talk!" I stopped and looked back and smiled and slowly walked towards her room.

I took the bystander stool and sat near her bed while she laid down with her stomach still in slight pain. She told me about her life how she wanted to live her life out and enjoy but now she couldn't. She worked as a accountant for a small company and she had no one to support her. Her parents abandoned her as soon as she turned 18 and that she lived in poverty for around 4 years before she completed her studies and finally got this job in the firm and how this cancer news ruined it all. She sobbed herself out and I just sat there silently listening to all of it.

After she stopped there was a moment of silence in the room. I sat there looking at her not knowing what to say and she looked tired and exhausted. I got up of the stool and looked at her and said "I am sure you will fight the cancer out and win. Your life is not over, you can still enjoy it everyday. Don't give up hope. Tomorrow your chemo session starts take rest." I turned back waving goodbye and almost left when she suddenly said that:
"I want to enjoy it now. Please take me outside..."

I was stunned. I could never take a sick patient out of the hospital. I turned around and looked into her eyes and said: "You know that I can't do that right, I might get fired". 'Nobody needs to know' she replied. Her beautiful eyes sank me and I nodded. She smiled and got up.

After changing from her hospital gown I slowly closed her room and walked out with her by my side. Pama, the nurse assigned the night duty was in another room helping some other patient. I slowly walked with her towards the elevator and got out.

I took her to the nearest coffee shop and we sat there drinking our coffees. We laughed and sipper our drinks in the cold, chilly night. Her hair was flying all over her face with strong gust. She looked at me straight in my eyes as she sipped her coffee. She wanted to go to a pub to enjoy but that would have been too much. The silence in the shop this time wasn't awkward. We starred at each other not knowing what to say or do next. I took her back to the hospital and we went back to the room slowly.

As she reached her room back she looked a bit sad. I said her to be cheerful and happy and that after treatment is over I will take her to the pub next time for sure. I turned around saying goodbye but her hand caught me from the back. She pulled me towards her and kissed me in the lips. Her lips had that strawberry taste and was wet and soft like a sponge. I was shocked and looked in her eyes. She said, "I also want to enjoy my life a bit more tonight."

I kissed her back and with my foot I slowly closed the door. She pushed me against the wall still kissing and locked the door with her left hand. I said to her "we gotta be quiet". She nodded and we went crazy for each other. We stripped each other naked and our bodies intertwined in the godly dance as we made love with each other crazy on the ground. She bit on her top not to scream out loud but a few sounds came out. When nurse Pama knocked on the door hearing a few screams she said that she was having a calf muscle cramp and that there was nothing to worry about. Even I had to bit on her panties so I also stayed silent. The smell from those wet one was just unbearable. It was the same smell that caught my attention in the morning. I enjoyed every little bit of it. After we where done she put her rose coloured wet panties back on and put her hospital gown up. I also put my clothes back on and kissed her goodbye as she laid on the bed. Just before I left she said
"I enjoyed my life a lot tonight John. The first experience was wild" I smirked back at her and left quietly.

The next day I clocked in at 9 am since I couldn't sleep last night thinking about her. When I came she was not in her room as she was taken to the chemo center of the hospital. I went to see Mrs. Jonathan in room 306.
"How are you today Mrs. Jonathan?" I asked. She called me near her and said, "I couldn't sleep last night. I think the young women next door must have been having some real bad stomach pain or something." I looked at her awkwardly with nothing much to say. I went with Mrs. Jonathan for her daily walk as usual waiting for 'Jane' to come back.

THE END.

This was intense and emotionally gripping, Arjun! The way John’s curiosity unfolds into something deeply personal and tender really pulls the reader in. Jane’s vulnerability, the quiet defiance against hospital rules, and that urgent need to live fully despite everything—made this story stand out. You’ve captured a raw, aching kind of intimacy here. Just voted 50 points. Would love if you check out my story too—Overheard at the Edge of Goodbye: https://notionpress.com/write_contest/details/6116/overheard-at-the-edge-of-goodbye
