It was just like any other day at the office for Rahul. He was preparing some sales report for his boss. He was the sales manager for the Eastern Region. Worked in the Kolkata Branch of the MNC he worked for. The mobile phone rang. It was his childhood friend Sudhir. "Hi where are are you Sir?" the cheerful voice of Sudhir brought a smile at Rahul's face. "At office, nothing much to do. Say what's up?"
"Actually I called to tell you that accidentally I have landed up with two club house passes for the test match tomorrow at Eden Gardens, between India and Australia. I was planning to watch the match with you. So can you come down tomorrow for the match?" "I would love to watch the match with you, that too at the stadium after a long time. But need to take a leave from office. Let me talk to my Boss and confirm." replied Rahul.
He slowly walked towards his bosses chamber full of excitement for his next day's plan for the match. As he entered the chamber of his boss Mr. Mukherjee. The General Manager of the company. He was busy in a call on the landline on his table. "Yes I am comming tomorrow morning, Ok see you tomorrow." Mr. Mukherjee hang up the call. "Yes Rahul tell me?".
Rahul thought for a second. If Boss is not coming to office tomorrow then what's the use of unnecessarily using up a leave. He thought of a plan to watch the match with out taking leave.
"Sir any client appointment tomorrow?" "Oh yes..a very good prospect. I will make the deal if things work out." replied Mr. Mukherjee. "Congratulations in advance Sir! I came to inform that I am also going on a client visit tomorrow. Our existing client in Hooghly called today, he has some requirement. May be he will place an order, need to visit." "Ok go ahead make sure you finalize the deal". "I will try my best Sir" Rahul came out of the chamber. Smiling as the existing client at Hooghly has already placed an order that his boss didn't knew, he will place it tomorrow. No need to visit this client. Hence now he is free to watch the test match at Eden Gardens tomorrow.
He called and confirmed Sudhir to meet him at the stadium at 9 AM sharp as he did not want to miss the toss, as it was the first day, and then the beginning.
As per plan both turned up at the stadium at 9 AM in the morning. After a long time two old friends accompanying each other for a cricket match. It doesn't get better than that for boys. The match started. It was sunny winter morning perfect for cricket. India lost the toss and had to bowl. "You see such a bad luck, I bunked office and came to see India bat now see them chase the ball and watch Australia bat all day. It turned out that way quite a bit as Australia was 70/1 at Lunch. They had CAB lunch vouchers, so they proceeded for lunch. There was a huge buffet. They were having lunch quietly when Rahul noticed his boss Mr. Mukherjee at a distance at the same hall having lunch with a lady. He was thunder struck. "What is he doing here ? that's my boss". Said Rahul "He is supposed to be in a client meeting how come he is here" said Sudhir "Have you noticed that lady with him" Sudhir continued. "Yes I did surely she is not his wife I know his wife" replied Rahul . "Let's move out of here. You will surely get a call from his chamber tomorrow morning, be prepared best of luck." Sudhir chuckled. "It is getting bad to worst, what to do? No place to hide. Surely I will have to look for a new job " said Rahul, trembling with fear. Mr. Mukherjee walked out from the hall. Rahul was surprised to see him disappear instead of charging straight at him after seeing him here.
The rest of the match went on every moment with anxiety. Rahul could feel Mr Mukherjee next to him, but he could not be seen anywhere near them. The match finished with Australia 245/5. End of day one.
At the stadium exit gate Mr. Mukherjee was once again spotted. He was within striking distance. Nobody will believe he didn't see Rahul., but again surprisingly he didn't recognise Rahul. Instead he just disappeared in the crowd.
Next day Rahul went to office with obvious fear that this could be his last day at office. He felt it in the air. Suddenly Mr. Mukherjee called him to his cabin. Rahul walked slowly, rehearsing to say sorry. "Come in Rahul?" Said Mr. Mukherjee " So what is the update on the Hooghly client ?"
" Sir Order is ready deal done" replied Rahul. "Very good, I must appreciate well done.! But by the way what's the score have you checked on the Match between India and Australia?" "Sir I don't remember." replied Rahul. "Excellent, Yesterday by any chance did you saw me with my girlfriend? yesterday at Eden Gardens" "Sir I don't remember" "Excellent indeed," he smiled, "remember that you don't remember. That's all back to your work" Mr. Mukherjee looked at the screen of his laptop. Rahul left the cabin with a huge relief. He almost had a heart attack. "What a dangerous man" he said to himself as he walked to his cubicle.

Hey Priyabrata Mitra! This story was such a delightful ride—humorous, sharp, and filled with that classic workplace tension we all secretly love. The ending line “Remember that you don’t remember” was just perfect—subtle, clever, and ominously funny! I gave it a full 50 points! If you get a moment, I’d be grateful if you could read my story, “Overheard at the Edge of Goodbye”, and I’d love to hear what you think: https://notionpress.com/write_contest/details/6116/overheard-at-the-edge-of-goodbye
