Submitted to Contest #5 in response to the prompt: 'You overhear something you weren’t meant to. What happens next?'

In this world, there is no one who doesn't have secrets. There will always be some secret which is enough to turn our lives upside down. Some secrets are never meant to be heard. They must be kept buried forever because they hold the power to destroy someone's life and relations permanently. But that's exactly what happened to me. I heard one of the biggest secrets of my parents which changed my perspective towards them. From the very beginning of my life, I held my parents in high regards. I adored them. I always respected them. My parents always used to buy gifts for me when they returned from work. But then one night, everything changed. I overheard one of their conversations, one of their deepest secrets that I was never supposed to hear. They were discussing something about 'drugs' and 'smuggling'. My eyes widened in horror to have heard this. "The dealers will be waiting in the bar tomorrow, I have prepared the package, you send your agent and deliver it to them." My mother said with a firm look and my dad nodded with a sinister smirk on his face. Then they both looked towards the door where I stood frozen. I could not process what was all this. I could not believe that my parents were smugglers. As I looked at them, their faces seemed as if they had seen a ghost. "Hey kiddo! How come you are awake at this hour?" My father acted as if nothing had happened. However my mother's face was ice cold. "What did you hear?" she directly inquired. "I'll not say you. I'll directly inform the cops!" I shouted. "And what will you say to them? Do you think they would believe you without any evidence?" my mom said and that was when I turned on the voice note I had recorded from the phone in my hand. That was when fear took over my parents. I sprinted towards the door and ran out. My parents followed me but I did not look back. I kept running. My breaths began coming in short gasps. Tears flowed freely down my cheeks. I ran barefoot, not caring the stones that were pricking my feet. My parents ran behind me, shouting my name. But it was too late. Since the police station was near my house, I reached there in no time and my parents also entered following me. "Officer! I have proof that my parents are drug smugglers!" I said in one breath and the Officer-in-charge stood up. "What are you saying kiddo? You have proof?" He asked back looking at me in disbelief. "Here" I said and handed the recording to him. As he was hearing everything, my parents entered the police station. "No officer! That's not true!" My father protested, but it went to vain because at that very moment, the Officer ordered the cops to put my parents in the lock-up. As I saw my parents being taken inside the jail, fresh tears started streaming down my face. I couldn't even breath properly. Everything seemed to spin. I felt nauseous and suddenly everything turned black. Soon, I opened my eyes to see that I was laying on a hospital bed. I noticed that my uncle and aunt had arrived and the doctor was explaining to them that I had a panic attack. As my aunt approached me, I hugged her tightly and burst out in tears. The warm embrace made me feel somehow stable. Then I got to know that their would be a trail regarding my parents' case and I had to be present at the court since I had the evidence and I was the only eye witness.
The case went on for a few days before my parents were declared as guilty. I starting living with my aunt and uncle. They weren't so rich like my parents, but atleast they weren't criminals either. Soon, I got to know another secret. I was adopted. They kept my biological parents at gunpoint and snatched me from them just because they did not have a child and they thought that I would be a good child for them. This secret of my parents changed my entire life. People do not look at me the same way anymore. Some think that I may be like my parents only. Some think I take drugs. Some criticise me for sending my parents to prison. But only I know I did it for the best. Living with criminal parents is worse than having no parents. Sometimes I doubt myself for sending them to jail, but then my aunt always says that they did wrong and they are just getting their karma. Maybe hearing this secret has destroyed me, but if I would not have heard it, maybe many other lives could be destroyed by the supply and consumption of drugs. That's why it is said that everything happens for a reason. I could have just kept it a secret and continued my life. But if felt wrong. I would have felt scared, guilty, regretful throughout my whole life if I had not revealed their true faces to the world. They deserved it. Drugs have ruined so many lives and this is because of the availability of drugs which is smuggled my these drug dealers. They deserve to be in jail for destroying so many innocent lives. Maybe the secret was never meant to be heard, but everything happens for a reason.
