Dr. Rashida Iqbal was born in Port Blair. Her father was Ainulla Khan, a Pashtun from Peshawar and her mother Nabisa Bibi, was a malayali moplah from Malabar district, Kerala. Ainulla was deported to Kala Pani and was incarcerated in the Cellular Jail in the year 1936. Since he had a driving licence from Peshawar, he was given the job of driving the jail van. After being released in 1937-38, he married Qamizun, the daughter of a convict, and lived in the settlement as a self-supporter (SS No 5677).
