Dr. Rashida Iqbal was born in Port Blair. Her father was Ainulla Khan, a Pashtun from Peshawar and her mother Nabisa Bibi, was a malayali moplah from Malabar district, Kerala. Ainulla was deported to Kala Pani and was incarcerated in the Cellular Jail in the year 1936. Since he had a driving licence from Peshawar, he was given the job of driving the jail van. After being released in 1937-38, he married Qamizun, the daughter of a convict, and lived in the settlement as a self-supporter (SS No 5677). After the death of his first wife, he married Nabisa, daughter of P.P.Kunjamu who came to the Andamans after the Moplah revolt.
Dr. Rashida Iqbal embodies a rich blend of diverse cultures and traditions. With a deep passion and profound expertise in the history, heritage, and culture of the Islands, she has dedicated three decades to exploring the fascinating narratives that shape the region. Her association with the iconic Cellular Jail and the National Memorial in various capacities, along with her dedicated efforts in preserving and showcasing the region's historical significance, is outstanding. Her remarkable contribution, including her pioneering book Unsung Heroes of Freedom Struggle in Andamans – Who's Who, published by the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, has shed light on the untold heroes of the freedom struggle.
Beyond her academic pursuits, Dr. Rashida Iqbal is a poet, writer, and well-known speaker who has been featured in National and International media. She obtained her Doctorate in history from Osmania University, Hyderabad, in 2010.
