Former Health Secretary,Government of India, J.V.R.Prasada Rao worked extensively in the health sector during and after his retirement from Government in 2004.He served as the Director of the National AIDS Control Organisation (NACO) from 1997 to 2002 and as the Union Health Secretary from 2002 to 2004.
Prasada Rao served as the Regional Director of UNAIDS,Bangkok from 2005 to 2009 and later as the Special Envoy of the UN Secretary General on AIDS for Asia Pacific region.
Prasada Rao joined the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) in 1967 and held important assignments in West Bengal. He served as Special Finance Secretary in the state and later as the Resident Commissioner of West Bengal in Delhi before joining the Government of India in 1997.
Prasada Rao hails from Srikakulam district of Andhra Pradesh. He did his postgraduation in Nuclear Physics from Andhra University, Visakhapatnam in 1964.He has three children and lives in Bangalore with his wife.
