Harnessing Gas Turbines with Coal Gasifiers or Fluidized Bed Boilers for Combined-cycle Power and Cogeneration

Author Name: K. Kuppuraj | Format: Paperback | Genre : Technology & Engineering | Other Details

With over 35 years at Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd. (BHEL)—India’s largest power equipment manufacturer—K. Kuppuraj has been a driving force in advancing power generation technology. A pioneer behind India’s first coal-based combined-cycle pilot plant, he has authored acclaimed papers such as "Coal Gas Combustion in Gas Turbine" and "Estimation of Off-Design Performance of Power Generating Gas Turbine in IGCC," and his research work has been featured in global journals including Power Engineering, Hydrocarbon Processing, and Chemical Engineering.

In this latest book, Kuppuraj offers an in-depth exploration of HRSG design and advanced technologies—such as supplementary and fresh-air firing systems with automatic mode transfer. He explains how these innovations ensure an uninterrupted steam supply and enhance the reliable operation of prime industries such as oil refineries. The author’s specialized nomogram enables engineers to estimate heat-recovery cost savings without even using a calculator.

Showcasing his extensive practical expertise, Kuppuraj details the development of gas turbines for coal gas combustion, duct burners, and external combustors for BFBC boiler startup, advanced firing system design for blast-furnace gas, apart from treatment methods for residual oil in gas turbines. Blending engineering precision with visionary foresight, he illustrates how integrating BFBC boilers with gas turbines improves efficiency, cuts fuel costs, and reduces emissions.

Drawing from decades of hands-on experience, this book serves as an indispensable resource for engineers, researchers, and energy professionals striving to enhance efficiency, sustainability, and innovation in modern power generation.

K. Kuppuraj

K. Kuppuraj is a leading authority in combined-cycle power and cogeneration, widely respected for his expertise in gas turbines and HRSGs across India. A Mechanical Engineering graduate from the University of Madras (Anna University), he began his career in 1976 at Bharat Heavy Electricals Ltd., India’s largest power equipment manufacturer, serving in the Research and Development department of its Boilers Design and Manufacturing Division. He spent 35 years driving innovations in coal-gas-fired gas turbines and HRSG design.

Kuppuraj has presented papers at national seminars and has published extensively in international journals, including Power Engineering, Hydrocarbon Processing, and Chemical Engineering. His nomogram for estimating steam generation and cost savings from waste heat recovery highlights his practical contributions to HRSG design.

K. Kuppuraj pioneered India’s first gas-turbine-based cogeneration plant for ONGC in 1982. He developed the automatic control logic for seamless transfer between heat-recovery and fresh-air-firing modes. In 1995, he trained at the Henry Vogt Machine Company in the USA, specializing in troubleshooting and performance testing. His expertise spans spiral-finned tubes for compact designs, modular HRSG upgrades, residual-fuel-oil treatment systems, and coal-gas firing adaptations for gas turbines.

With hands-on experience validating over 50 combined-cycle and cogeneration plants, Kuppuraj has shaped India’s power sector through innovation and implementation, leaving a lasting impact on India’s combined-cycle power and cogeneration sectors. Insight or blending engineering insight with visionary thinking, he continues to lead advancements in coal-gas-fired gas turbine and coal-fired PFBC boiler technologies.
