My Dear Malayali The True Story of Kerala and the Rest of India - in My Experience

Author Name: V. S. SENTHIL KUMARAN | Format: Paperback | Genre : Educational & Professional | Other Details

There is a saying that “when Neil Armstrong landed on the moon, he saw a Malayali running a tea shop there.” While everyone knows this is untrue, the saying reflects a deeper reality: Malayalis are found worldwide. From tea shops across India to communities abroad, their presence is pervasive. Despite making up only 2.7% of India’s population, what enables…

The Malayalis to achieve this reach?

What sets them apart from other Indian language groups?

Are they entirely of Indian origin, and how do they differ from the rest of the Indian population?

Drawing from his experiences during a brief two-year stay in Kerala, the author explores these questions in a unique way. While many books focus on Kerala’s tourism and natural beauty, this book offers a different perspective—examining its people, culture, and customs in contrast with the rest of India. It reveals lesser-known, distinctive traits of Keralites, offering readers an insightful glimpse into The Real Stories of Kerala and its people: The Malayalis.

V. S. SENTHIL KUMARAN

V. S. Senthil Kumaran, son of Subramanian, was born in Puducherry in 1978 and lives with his wife and two children. An educationist by profession, he has long guided students preparing for competitive examinations and career choices. His formative years at Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya—a central school system spread across India—and his ability to converse, read, and write in four languages sparked a lasting curiosity about people from different linguistic and cultural backgrounds.

Gifted with a keen eye for observation and analysis, and inspired by his recent stay in Kerala, the author chose to explore one of India’s most distinctive language communities—the Malayalis, the Malayalam-speaking people of India. While many writers have documented India’s diverse ethnic and linguistic groups, this book is his personal contribution to that tradition. Through his debut work, My Dear Malayali – The True Story of Kerala and the Rest of India – in My Experience, he offers readers a thoughtful, experience-driven perspective on Kerala and its people.
