Bijoy Krushna Mahanti
Born in 1935, Bijoy Krushna Mahanti is a distinguished legal professional with over six decades of experience in tax and constitutional law. He earned his law degree in 1956 and began his career practicing criminal law before specializing in tax litigation. Over the years, he has appeared in significant cases before various High Courts and the Supreme Court of India.
A respected leader in the legal fraternity, he served as President of the Orissa High Court Bar Association (2000-2001) and the Indian Association of Lawyers (1997-1998). Under the leadership of Justice P. N. Bhagwati, he was part of a delegation to the USSR, contributing to discussions on the introduction of judicial review in the Soviet legal system. As Advocate General of Odisha (2004-2009), he played a pivotal role in the establishment of the National Law University at Cuttack.
Beyond his legal contributions, Mahanti has been actively involved in various social and cultural organizations, including the Odisha Gymnastics Association, Odisha Development Forum Trust, Odisha Folk Academy, and Rangamancha Trust. He also served as President of the Governing Body of Ravenshaw College and currently serves as a trustee of the Ravenshaw University Development Trust.
His contributions extend across law, governance, and the preservation of Odisha’s rich cultural heritage.
