Tanmay Bhattacharjee
The writer of the book, Professor Tanmay Bhattacharjee, a retired professor from the Department of Political Science, Assam University, Silchar, Assam, has been deeply involved in academics with decades of enriching experience in teaching both undergraduate and postgraduate students until his retirement. His extended stay in the hill districts of Assam and his teaching engagements at the undergraduate level proved to be both fascinating and educational. During this time, he was delightfully exposed to the vast field of tribal studies in the hills of Central Assam, particularly in Karbi Anglong and Dima Hasao. These experiences offered him a closer view of tribal life and how communities adapted to evolving political landscapes in the wake of constitutional provisions post-Indian independence. Driven by curiosity, he developed a keen interest in regional studies, especially tribal institutions, their operations, and their responses to political changes. He has several publications in both English and Bengali. Among his notable works are: Sociology of the Karbis, The Sylhet Referendum: The Story of a Lost Territory, Political Economy of North East India, and Revisiting Dima Hasao: In Search of a Rhythm. He has many Bengali publications and holds several unpublished manuscripts ready for future release. His teaching career spans over forty years, beginning in the 1960s. Even after retirement, he remains actively engaged in writing and reviewing his work. Born in Shillong, Meghalaya, he earned his Master’s and PhD in Political Science from Gauhati University, Assam.
