I was in a bookshop in New Delhi when I decided to capture and write about my future travels through India. Without a plan in mind, I set out on a pilgrimage to various temples. I would soon learn that, while haphazard, this was an ideal method of discovering the land, the streets, and the people of India. I had studied photography for eight years and was trained in the finer aspects of composition and printing. All but six compositions were photographed in 1986, 1988, and 1989, composed in the viewfinder, creating the highest quality color print. Additionally, each composition was made using only one attempt for each subject. This was my way of trying to capture the spontaneous spirit of this land and gave me a deep commitment to the art of photography. I would like to thank Rudolf Zwamborn for his vision and technical support, and my father for his wisdom and patience. This book is dedicated to Chip Armstrong. I am sorry for all the hurt and humiliation the world has shown you. Keep running. These stories are mostly told from someone else’s point of view.
